Google will keep ChromeOS updates running through mid-2034

Google's support page states that ChromeOS devices will continue to receive regular updates and security patches through mid-2034. Google has not published a list of eligible Chromebook models or explained how migration will work. Chromebooks bought in 2021 or earlier are most likely to face eligibility questions, since Google's focus is on its newest models.

Google says many of its newest Chromebook devices will be eligible to transition to Googlebook OS, with details on migration paths and device eligibility to be shared soon. Which Chromebooks can migrate

Google's automatic-update policy assigns each Chromebook a 10-year support window tied to the device rather than a universal platform cutoff. A Chromebook reaching its published Auto Update Expiration date before 2034 will ordinarily stop receiving security patches at that point under the standard lifecycle. Googlebook devices also carry a 10-year update commitment, but the clock starts from the platform and CPU launch date, so a laptop built on an older processor may carry fewer than 10 years of remaining support at retail.

Google says device management features for Googlebook OS in enterprise and education settings will begin rolling out in the second half of 2027. Until then, Googlebook management is limited: users can sign in with managed Google Workspace accounts on private devices, provided domain administrators allow them through Google Endpoint Management, and Chrome browser policies can be managed in the cloud. Google says these cover the most common browser policies used in enterprise and school environments.

What enterprise users still lack

Google says Googlebook OS will eventually be managed like Chromebooks, with device, user and browser management, device and user reports, zero-touch enrolment deployment, and support for third-party enterprise mobility management software. It also says ChromeOS security features — sandboxing, verified boot, automatic updates, secure review support and multi-stage filtering — will arrive in Googlebook OS step by step. Existing ChromeOS Enterprise Upgrade and ChromeOS Education Upgrade licences stay active for a Chromebook's full lifecycle, but Google has not published the new licence structure.
